Cursive

R brought this home from school today . . . work she did earlier this week . . .

I remember when she couldn’t get a Cheerio® in her mouth.

I also remember when she put seed beads on a beading needle a week before she turned three.

At this exact moment I am also acutely aware of the fact that she is over halfway to sixteen.

Must (sigh) get (sniff) tissue.

1928 Fletcher Avenue

Sometimes really cool things happen . . . for what appears to be no reason. Maybe someday you discover there was a reason for this really cool thing happening . . . or maybe you don’t . . . it doesn’t matter. It is as though G-d smiles down and you one day and says, “Here . . . this is for you . . . just because, just for fun.”

Last week G-d smiled down at my mom and gave her a “just because” gift. I got to be there and it was pretty neat. Here is what happened . . .

Mom spent the majority of her youth in Southern California – South Pasadena to be exact – which just happens to be in the same half of California where Husband and kids and I are spending the next few years. Needless to say, when Mom was visiting last week she wanted to explore the area she remembers so vividly from her childhood . . . so we took a drive and did just that.

We found the street she lived on in elementary school. We found the location of the first house she and Aunt J and Nana lived in which is now a church parking lot. We also found the second house they lived in . . .

This house . . .

at 1928 Fletcher Avenue. It is a gorgeous Craftsman style home built in 1905.

When we pulled up in front of the house the front door was open . . . which allowed Mom to see the pillars inside and confirm that it was indeed the house she remembered.

It also allowed us to see that the house was clearly empty. We also noticed a For Sale sign in the yard and a maintenance company vehicle parked in the driveway . . . and being one of those people who isn’t afraid to ask . . . I asked the handyman if we could peek in the windows. He told us we could go past the windows. We did and Mom got to spend half an hour wandering through the house she lived in when she was in 5th and 6th grade.

It was pretty awesome.

This is the stair landing Nana stood on when she lectured Mom . . . because by the time Mom was in 6th grade she had a good five inches on her mother and because if a mama is going to scold her children it is much more effective if the mama has the height advantage . . . real or artificial.

Clearly a bit of updating has been done.

This pool wasn’t there.

The garage was where this tree house is now.

The door to the backyard was here. Now it is an office area.

I covet this ceiling.

So beautiful . . .

I love touring these old Craftsman homes . . . the fact that Mom and Aunt J used to sit in the dining room in this one and play Canasta when it was too hot to play outside made this walk through extra special. The house at 1928 Fletcher Avenue is gorgeous . . . sale pending . . . asking price $1,099,999. I am pretty sure the rent Nana paid in 1949 wouldn’t cover those mortgage payments.

So grateful for the “just because” gifts we get from G-d,
D

P.S. No picture of the upstairs bedrooms! Ugh! Too busy running the video camera to catch Mom’s commentary . . .

P.S.S. For really great pictures of the house that were not taken with a device intended to be a phone . . . check out the MLS link.

A Few G Things

This afternoon G asked me what he could do to be in the newspaper . . . I told him he could either do something really smart or really stupid . . . to which he replied:

“Remember when I made chlorine when I put pepperoni in water and left it there and it tasted like sink (tap) water? Can you call the newspaper man and tell him about that?”

Initially I told him that probably wouldn’t get him in the paper. He wanted to know, “What are more options?”

I told him he could rescue more cats from trees than any other person in the world. “That would take years,” he said.

I later changed my mind and told him that if he did indeed make chlorine from water and pepperoni it would probably get him in the paper; in the meantime I would write about it on my blog. He still attempted to persuade me to call the newspaper man . . . he even told me what to say, “Can you call him and say, ‘My son, who is only six . . . ‘” I told him if the newspaper man reads my blog and decides to write about the chlorine pepperoni he is welcome to do so.

An hour later this same child wanted to know how tall a stack of 583 microscopic ants would be.

Cheers,
D

Whatcha been up to?

Ok – so it’s been awhile since I posted anything . . . not because I went on a T.V. vacation but because of technical difficulties.

I do not manage technical difficulties well.

Mostly I just ignore them until I simply cannot stand it any more.

So clearly I couldn’t stand it and I am blogging in spite of the poor relationship between the blog’s web interface and my computer . . . because I just had to let you know what we’ve been up to the past few weeks.

So here it is in pictures . . .

The first day we were all together here we spent a bit of time in the water . . .

We also spent part of that day – and an insane amount of time that week – at Ikea . . . which means we spent equally insane amounts of time engaged in activities resembling this . . .

Which resulted in a whole lot of this . . .

In between assembling furniture and taking out recycling we played in our own little personal swimming pools . . .

And admired the local wildlife . . . from our front yard . . .

We also made a trip to the Arboretum . . .

Which is amazing and will be visited again soon . . .

We admired more wildlife . . . again, from our front yard . . .

Played in the water some more . . .

Started school . . .

Had a birthday . . . putting to good use the one and only candle I brought with us from Alaska . . . planning ahead for when G turns 8. Didn’t realize we’d need it so soon. The 8 goes well with the 14 I wanted on my cake.

Bought a really cool plant . . .

Played in the river . . .

Admired more wildlife from you-know-where . . .

And lost two teeth . . . at least R did.

The End,
D

Technical Difficulties

WordPress interface and new Mac not playing well in sandbox = no blog post in forever . . . forever will continue until visit to the Apple Store in two weeks unless hijack hubby’s PC . . .

Will do best to hijack at least once or twice in next two weeks!

Sorry!
